Computer Battery Backup – Protect Your Home Computer
Computer battery backup systems are designed to protect your home computer from common power problems and supply
emergency backup power when the main power fails. They are different from an emergency power system or standby
generator because they provide instant protection from power interruptions from one or more attached batteries.
Computer battery backup systems protect a home computer during complete power failure, power surges or sags,
power spikes, noise, frequency instability, and harmonic distortion.
Power surges and sags refer to momentary or sustained increases or decreases in input power voltage. A power surge
can be especially dangerous for a home computer.
Even though they may last for only some thousandths of a second, this high voltage can exceed the withstand
voltage of the insulating layers of the integrated circuit chips and essentially burn all of the internal parts of
a computer, rendering it useless.
Power spikes are quite similar to power surges, but this term refers to a brief high voltage excursion. Noise is
usually injected into a power line by nearby equipment, and is defined as a high frequency oscillation.
Frequency instability and harmonic distortion are temporary changes in the mains frequency and the departure
from the ideal sinusoidal waveform expected on the power line. All are extremely dangerous for home computers, so
computer battery backup is highly recommended for all users.
The measurement of performance and functionality for computer battery backup systems is based on several
factors. First, the VA Rating is based on the mathematical formula of volts multiplied by amps. From this rating,
one can determine how many pieces of equipment can be hooked up to the computer battery backup and how much drain
it can handle.
Second, the runtime refers to the number of minutes the battery will stay on after the power goes out. This is
usually presented as a range of time based on the level of drain on the battery, or the VA.
Third, a joule is a measurement of energy, and the higher the joule rating, the longer the protection will last.
While providing computer battery backup, it is also important to protect both the home’s phone line and the coaxial
cable line. Electrical surges can enter a home through either line and can harm or destroy sensitive electrical
devices, including the home computer.
In fact, if a home has a computer, a home entertainment system, and a stereo, each device should be plugged into
the computer battery backup system. If just one device is not protected, it can send a power surge through the
other pieces of equipment and cause permanent damage.
The three types of computer battery backup systems are the standby systems, the line interactive systems, and
the online systems. Standby systems provide basic power protection, while line interactive systems can actually
correct power fluctuations, and online systems provide the highest level of protection by actually converting the
power and thereby removing most imperfections.
Computer battery backup systems protect not only your data, but also the computer itself and the other
sophisticated (and expensive) equipment in your home.
